Axelbandet is the best (and the only) big band of Åbo Akademi University, and has been around for over 50 years. Though the band mostly consists of students of Åbo Akademi University, we have also welcomed members from the University of Turku and Novia University of Applied Sciences. In short, anyone who is interested in big band music is free to join.

Our repertoire comprises numerous musical styles, including jazz, swing and funk. The composition of the band includes traditional big band instruments such as saxophones, trombones, trumpets, piano, bass, drums and percussion as well as clarinets.

Are you in need of a fun band to play at your event? In that case, you should consider booking Axelbandet. We play all kinds of gigs, from weddings to smaller occasions. Our setup varies according to the nature of the event, and we can provide a smaller group of musicians for lounge-type events, or genuine big band composition for bigger events. Do you enjoy big band jazz? If so, join Axelbandet, the student orchestra at Åbo Akademi University! We practice every Monday from 7 PM to 9 PM in Chemicum (Akatemiankatu 1), and always happily welcome new members.

Alternately, you can just show up outside of Chemicum at 7 PM on a Monday, and our members will come and let you in so you can check out our practice.
